Incoming Procedure

Incoming Procedure


Foreign Nationals registered for a degree in a recognised Institute/University who is officially sponsored by that Institute/University to carry out Course work / Research or to avail himself a laboratory or other facilities at IITM for a period of not exceeding two semester can be accepted as visiting students under the MoU or otherwise. The research scholars visiting IITM for thesis/ project work/research work  should contact the professors in advance to take their approval for guidance.

Admission of foreign Nationals under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between IITM and the Country/ University/Institution concerned. Students have to bear the normal living expenses boarding, lodging and travel expenses. Accommodation will be provided in Hostels on payment basis (approx. Rs.20,000/- per semester). No tuition fee will be levied from the students who are coming under MoU.

Deadlines:
Autumn (Odd) Semester (July – November): 15th May (every year)
Spring (Even) Semester (January – April): 15th November (every year)

Procedure to apply:

Exchange program (UG/PG)

  • Application form is available on the tab “Students – Incoming – Application”.
  • The form must be filled by the candidate and posted along with three passport size photographs to the mailing address.
  • The application form, transcripts, resume and Passport copy must be sent along with a nomination letter from the International affairs office of your University mentioning the department you would like to apply to.
  • To identify departments, click on http://www.iitm.ac.in/info/dept
  • For courses offered department wise click on http://www.iitm.ac.in/courses/dept
  • Students are expected to have a good knowledge of English
  • All students must come under a student visa and not a tourist or entry visa.

Exchange program (MS/PhD/Project work)

  • Identify a faculty advisor you are interested to work with in IITM.
  • To identify departments and the faculty advisor click on http://www.iitm.ac.in/info/dept
  • Approach the concerned faculty through the recommendation of your advisor / guide.
  • Acceptance letter (or email) is required from the concerned faculty.
  • Download the application form available on(http://www.oir.iitm.ac.in) the tab “Students – Incoming – Application”.
  • The form must be filled by the candidate and posted along with three passport size photographs, resume and Passport copy.
  • The documents must be sent along with a nomination letter from the International affairs office of your University.
  • Students are expected to have a good knowledge of English
  • In case of project work or course work, all students must come under a student visa and Phd scholars
    must apply for a research visa.

Internship Program:
Winter Internship (Dec – mid Jan)
Summer Internship (mid May – mid July)

Joint PhD program

  • Students are initially selected and admitted into the PhD programs at either Institute as per norms.
  • The subsequent joint selection for JDP can be carried out within 6- 12 months of the student enrolling in the PhD program.
  • The supervisor at home institution must communicate with their collaborating faculty in the partner University.
  • Once accepted, the collaborating faculty members become the respective students’ guide / supervisor.
  • The doctoral committee which will be set up to monitor the scholar will check on the progress till thesis is completed.
  • Students have to pass a comprehensive examination which will be conducted by the DC of the student (as per the rules of the Home Institute).
  • Scholar has to meet his/her academic requirements at the Home Institute.
  • The PhD student must spend a minimum of one year at the Partner Institute working under the supervision of their co guide.
  • JDP students must follow the rules and regulations of the Partner Institute as well as the Home Institute.
  • Financial assistance will be discussed case by case and decided by the collaborating universities.
